There’s a particular kind of magic to the North Shore in early July — the mountains are green, the evenings stretch long and golden, and the whole waterfront seems to hum with people who’ve finally traded raincoats for patio weather. This is peak summer on Lonsdale, and the calendar is packed. Whether you’re staying close to home for a Friday night at the Shipyards or heading across the bridge for one of the city’s biggest street parties, here’s what’s worth your time this week.
🍽️ New & Notable — Food + Drink
Two openings have Lower Lonsdale buzzing this summer. Forecast Coffee is bringing a new neighbourhood roaster to the 17th and Lonsdale corner — exactly the kind of local spot the upper stretch of the avenue has been waiting for.
And pizza fans, take note: Ignite Pizza is firing up near the bottom of Lonsdale, adding another reason to wander the waterfront end of the street. If you haven’t been down to the Lonsdale Quay Food Hall since its refresh earlier this year, it’s worth a fresh look — the reimagined space runs the gamut from fried chicken to Asian comfort food, all anchored by the Mainstay bar.
🎉 Events & Entertainment
The Shipyards Night Market is back every Friday, and it remains the beating heart of a North Van summer — food trucks, market vendors, a beer garden and live music spilling out along the waterfront. Get there early for the golden-hour views across to the city skyline. On Thursday evenings, Live & Local keeps the free music going down at the Shipyards, so there’s really no excuse to stay in this week.
If you’re up for crossing the bridge, this is a big weekend in the city. Carnaval del Sol — the Pacific Northwest’s largest Latin American festival — takes over Jonathan Rogers Park in Mount Pleasant from July 10 to 12, with more than 350 artists, a parade, food and dance (free for kids under 12 and seniors). And the beloved Khatsahlano Street Party returns Saturday, July 11, stretching along West 4th in Kitsilano with 50-plus musical acts and a full day of free arts and food.
🌿 Outdoors & Active
Summer is the season the North Shore was built for. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is at its lush best right now, the canyon deep green and the treetop walkways cool under the canopy. Prefer to keep your feet on solid ground? The Lower Seymour trails and the Baden-Powell are perfect this time of year, and a sunset stroll along the Spirit Trail from Lonsdale toward Ambleside is hard to beat on a warm evening. For a bit of competitive spirit, the Vancouver Open Beach Volleyball tournament runs July 9–11 down at the beach — great to watch even if you’re not diving in the sand.
🏪 New Businesses & Cool Finds
The Loutet Farm community market is running again this summer — a genuine urban farm tucked into North Van, offering just-picked produce and a lovely reminder of how much grows right in our own backyard. It’s a small, local, wholeheartedly North Shore way to spend part of a weekend morning.
🏡 Community Corner
The Shipyards District keeps going from strength to strength. After a record-breaking stretch of events that drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to the waterfront, Lower Lonsdale is having one of its most ambitious summers yet — proof that the old shipbuilding grounds have become one of the region’s true community gathering places.
There’s a reason so many of us are happy to call this place home. Weeks like this — mountains at our back, ocean at our feet, and a neighbourhood full of things to do — are exactly it. Get out there and enjoy it, and follow along for more of what’s happening across the North Shore and Vancouver.———Kevin Lynch | North Vancouver Real Estate & Community
